Copley Primary School

SMSC

SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education. At Copley primary school, we recognise the importance of providing opportunities within the curriculum for children to develop their pupils knowledge and understanding in these areas. SMSC is embedded in our whole school ethos where we celebrate our children's resilience, achievement, team work, understanding of healthy living and empathy.

Here is a brief breakdown of each, taken from the DFE (department for education) website :

Spiritual - ability to be reflective on their own beliefs and  the experiences they have. The knowledge of and respect for peoples feelings, faiths and the values they hold. A sense of enjoyment in learning about themselves, others and the world around them. Use of imagination and creativity in their learning.

Moral - being able to recognise the difference between right and wrong and apply this in their own lives. Understand the consequences of their behaviour and actions. Recognise legal boundaries and respect the civil and criminal law of England.  Investigate moral and ethical issues and offer a reasoned view.

Social - encourage children to use a range of social skills; participate in the local community, appreciate diverse viewpoints, engage with the ‘British Values’ of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths, beliefs and people without faith.

Culturalencourage our pupils to appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain’s parliamentary system; participate in cultural opportunities and understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
